1. Apply sunscreen often. American Academy of Dermatology recommends that all kids—regardless of skin tone—wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply about every 2 hours (more if your kids are sweating or swimming). Don’t forget about the tops of their feet, behind the neck and under bathing-suit straps.
2. Cover up! The sun is an amazing thing, but too much can do some serious damage to sensitive skin. Bring an umbrella or even a small tent to have a cool off area, it works wonders when its nap time, you don’t have to leave the beach and the little ones can nap comfortably without feeling the heat. Hats are a great accessories to bring to the beach. Most people forget to cover the tops of their heads and feel it later when brushing their hair! Ouch! Even with a hat, put a little sunscreen just in case it falls off.
3. Clouds in the sky won’t stop sunburn! Cloudy days and windy days are notorious for “sneak-attack” sunburns! Remember: The sun’s UV rays are not stopped by the clouds.
4. Keep skin hydrated! It’s easy to develop dry, chapped lips and skin in the summer. Make sure everyone is drinking plenty of water, especially during the hottest parts of the day (10:00am to 4:00 pm). At night, after your beach day, apply lotion or moisturizer to keep skin hydrated.
5. Take a Dip! Taking a few dips in the water will help you and your little beach bums cool off after playing in the sand for a while. If your little ones are a little scared of the water, sit with them along the shore and splash around J you can even put a little water in a spray bottle to spritz when you feel like you’re getting overheated. Keep in in a cooler or small lunch bag. We promise you won’t mind the kids spraying you, it feels great!
